HANCOCK (WBNG) – Just 45 miles east is home to one of the most decorated basketball players in Section IV.
“Hancock is my favorite place in the world,” said Hancock junior Laycee Drake.
“She’s dominant on the board, shes dominant shooting the ball, every facet of Laycee’s game has grown and she continues to grow,” said Deposit/Hancock coach Todd Hertzog.
Only a junior on the Deposit/Hancock basketball tea,, Drake has already broken Hancock’s all time scoring record for both boys and girl’s basketball.
“I actually had no clue, I didn’t know that I was close or anything, I didn’t find out until the next day,” said Drake.
“She’s continued to work hard, she works hard everyday in practice in and out she continues to work hard to grow her game and it shows on the floor,” said Hertzog.
Averaging nealry 35 points per game, Drake has led the Eagles to a 16-1 record and the 18th ranked spot in Class C.
“I want to do a lot more stuff than just this,” said Drake.
When you look up and the girls basketball banner in the Hancock Elementary School gym you see,
“Not much,” said Drake,
and she’s looking to change that.
“It would be crazy this is my fourth year and we still haven’t won anything so that would be nice,” said Drake.
“She plays, she plays for the love of the game, she’s very humble but when she’s out there on the court she plays because she loves the game,” said Hertzog.
With numerous division one schools already looking in Drake’s direction,
“It’s a really cool, it’s a dream come true definitely,” said Drake.
She is contiuing to bring more and more attention to her favorite place in the world.
“I think it’s cool to represent a small town because nobody is expecting anything from you or anything so yeah it’s cool,” said Drake.
If you see Drake’s game for yourself, you are bound to entertained.
