The current buzz and viability around Mzansi’s house music scene is undeniable. This particular genre has provided a lot of DJs with rock solid, sustainable and fulfilling careers.

However, opportunities weren’t as galore as they are now. Back then, Kwaito was the biggest viable genre in South Africa. Another genre that has heavily borrowed some elements of Kwaito is hip hop. House music was slowly tailing behind, but a bunch of revolutionary DJ’s continued to vye for the advancement of the genre.

The current state of house music has immensely reached worldwide status. With the likes of DJ Black Coffee being a lighthouse for modern day success within the realm of the genre.

Although traces of Kwaito can be heard in some of his songs, the influence of house remains very much palpable in his previous and current records.

In this article, we are shining the spotlight on the pioneers of house music in South Africa.

Although, the legendary DJs have evolved with the times, the core and fundamentals of house music have not been diluted.

These select few DJ’s paved the way for the current generation of DJ’s. Most of them are still practitioners in the music industry and continuing being an inspiration –  whilst making us hit the dance floor – Yep they still got it!
